As a college student and overall fool with money, travel is one of my fantasies never realized. I then discovered Bill Bryson after an ill-advised trip to Boston and I picked up 'The Mother Tongue' in a gift shop in Salem. I was never a reader of non-fiction but the humor and sheer volume of facts in this book hooked me. As I tend to do, I went to extremes. I bought 'In a Sunburned Country', 'I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away', and 'A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Official Guides to the Appalachian Trail)' all in one trip and read them at a pace that I have never read a book before. They were fantasitc and I had an appetite for Bryson in the same league as cheesecake...and I love cheesecake! While I loved reading his books to be transported to places I'd never be able to go, he was obvious busy writing one of my favorite books of all time: 'A Short History of Nearly Everything'. I've always been a Dicovery Channel fan of the sciences but it was so hard to piece things together and not be overwhelmed (and ultimately disinterested) from a half hour show. This book made it easy for idiots like me to understand and be genuinely interested in. I order all who read this to buy these books. No one has ever made non-fiction so funny and tolerable!
