Know everything about Hawaii A guide by kimokalani, travel agent, Hawaiiana buff See all products
| If you want to know everything about Hawaii, first read 'Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook (Hawaii the Big Island Revealed)' or 'Frommer's Hawaii 2005 (Frommer's Complete)'. The first is an excellent guide to Hawaii, the other is good, but more general. Reading either will make it so you know the best things to visit and do when you arrive. Second, you HAVE TO READ 'KeAloha: The Keeper'. "KeAloha the Keeper" is a fabulous book, appropriate for both young and old, and I highly recommend that you read it BEFORE you come to Hawaii. Its the perfect book to read on the plane, fast-paced, thrilling and based on true Hawaiian rituals and beliefs, and it will teach you far more about Hawaii and its customs than any other book out on the market today! Third, read 'Pidgin to da Max' and 'Pidgin to da Max Hana Hou'. Both of these are fun reads (their more like comics than books), and they'll teach you Hawaiian pidgin English so you can understand us locals, but don't try to speak it else you offend somebody! Then, if you have extra time and more interest, try reading 'The Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii', and perhaps 'Shark Man of Kapu Bay (Neri, P. J. Hawaii Chillers, 1.)' just for something light. And for those of you who are into politics, you may enjoy or utterly hate 'Then There Were None'. This is an award-winning book, but I can't recommend the book personally. 'Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen' by Hawaii's last queen, Queen Liliokalani, I can recommend, however, because it is Hawaiian history straight from the queen! And now you got the scoops straight from a mainland-bound Hawaiian! |
