Rapid City is a city in Pennington County, South Dakota, USA. As of the 2005 census estimate, the city had a total population 62,167. Rapid City is the hub of the Black Hills and the primary city in a metro of about 150,000. It is the county seat of Pennington County and the second largest city in South Dakota after Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls may be larger in population, but Rapid City is much larger in size due to highlands, canyons, and foothills. Rapid City is also the principal city of and is included in the Rapid City, South Dakota Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Rapid City Journal is the daily newspaper. Rapid City is known as the "Gateway City" to the Black Hills. The most common source of revenue for Rapid City is banking, development, agriculture, and tourism.
