The lure of trading the financial markets draws tens of thousands of people each year with visions of easy money. Most of them leave the markets disappointed. Why? The specific reasons are numerous, but most can be traced back to a lack of preparedness for what they were about to face. That's why it's so important to have a firm understanding of the markets and how to trade them before making the plunge.
With all due humility, I recommend my own book The Essentials of Trading : From the Basics to Building a Winning Strategy (Wiley Trading) as a very good starting point. It is literally a ground up guide to getting starting in trading and investing. I wrote it based on my experience teaching the subject to college students how had zero experience in trading. You will learn what you need to know to get started from this book, and it will save you loads of money that you might otherwise spend wastefully on trading seminars, courses, and services.
The book I recommend as a follow-up to mine is The Psychology of Trading: Tools and Techniques for Minding the Markets, by Brett Steenbarger. Brett's book is, I feel, required reading for any trader. There are a great many articles and books on trading psychology. Most harp on the idea of being disciplined. This book, though, goes deeper. It helps you figure out the root causes to issues you have in your trading. The reader doesn't come away feeling like an outcast for being the way he/she is, but rather with an idea of how to use their own mental make-up to help themself do better.
The other books I strongly recommend are Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders (New York Institute of Finance) and The New Market Wizards: Conversations with America's Top Traders (A Marketplace Book). Jack Schwager's books should be in every trader's library. The interviews they contain are both informative and inspiring. I've read and reread them too many time to remember, each time gaining new insights. There are other books which feature interviews with noted traders and/or investors, but none can matche the Market Wizards series.
If you no other but the books listed hear, you will be way along your way to success in the markets. Products mentioned include:
