| Introduction I glanced at a few of the guides on here and realized that if people are actually recommending Doyle Brunson's Super System and various Ken Warren books, then you need a guide that will set you straight. Included are only the best books on the game of limit hold 'em. They are listed in the order that I would recommend reading them. The Building Blocks 'Getting Started in Hold 'em' Ed Miller's Getting Started in Hold 'em is the best beginner's guide to the game. 'The Theory of Poker' David Sklansky's The Theory Of Poker touches on much more than limit hold 'em, but it is the ultimate building block to becoming a winning player. The Strategy Books 'Winning Low-Limit Hold'em' I'm hesitant to recommend this Lee Jones book, but it's one of the few 2+2 books that isn't bad. 'Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big With Expert Play' This is another great Ed Miller book that is intended for your standard online limit game, filled with lots of bad players. It is certainly better than the Lee Jones book, and the strategies recommended are superior. 'Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker' This also is not a 2+2 book, but it certainly lives up to their standards. This is of at least nearly the same quality as Ed Miller's book, but it covers a lot of different ground. 'Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players (Advance Player)' This book, as the its title would indicate, is a more advanced book than those recommended above. Some of the strategies in this book are not all that useful in a game full of terrible players. The strategies are far more useful in a game full of relatively competent players. That said, this book is still very useful, because it teaches you how to think as a poker player, much like Sklansky's Theory of Poker. 'Inside the Poker Mind: Essays on Hold 'em and General Poker Concepts' This book is dedicated almost entirely to limit hold 'em. Tournament poker is discussed briefly. There are several very good essays here. Conclusion In conclusion, stay away from the Ken Warren and Phil Hellmuth books. Their limit strategies are foggy at best. The best thing you can do for yourself after reading these books is find a good poker discussion board and read and think about the game as much as you can. |
