The Curse
The Curse by Atreyu
Atreyu gets Top Spot this year because, simply, I can't STOP listening to it. Equally Melodic, Heavy, and Catchy. Key Tracks: Bleeding Mascara, You Eclipsed By Me, Right Side of the Bed.
The Empire Strikes First
The Empire Strikes First by Bad Religion
A great political punk/rock album, Bad Religion show they're still as important as all of the bands that so blatantly rip off their style. Key tracks: Sinister Rouge, Let Them Eat War, God's Love
Siren Song of the Counter Culture
Siren Song of the Counter Culture by Rise Against
A great politically themed album, Rise A. also blends being heavy, melodic, and catchy really well. Great lyrics! Key tracks: State of the Union, To Them These Streets Belong, Give It All

American Idiot
American Idiot by Green Day
I used to hate Green Day, but i had to check this out . It blew me away! A great rock opera, and a good example of the influence Bad Religion has on bands today. Key tracks: Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday
Glorious Burden [Limited Edition w/ Bonus CD]
Glorious Burden [Limited Edition w/ Bonus CD] by Iced Earth
A great thematical album about real historical events. Old-school power metal. The 3 song, 34-minute epic "Gettysburg (1863)" is worth it alone. Key tracks: The Reckoning, Hold at all Costs, Greenface
To The 5 Boroughs
To The 5 Boroughs by Beastie Boys
After 20 years, The Beastie Boys still manage to sound fresh and new and relevant. Another great politically charged album. Key Tracks: It Takes Time To Build, An Open Letter To NYC
Leviathan
Leviathan by Mastodon
This album is inspired by Moby Dick, and the name of both the band and the album are fitting metaphor's for the band's sound. They put on a great live show.  Key Tracks: I Am Ahab, Naked Burn
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses by Slipknot
With the help of producer Rick Rubin (my personal fave), it looks like Slipknot have finally found a way to utilize having 9 members.  Key tracks: The Blister Exists, Before I Forget
Panopticon
Panopticon by Isis (Rock)
A mostly instrumental CD in the vein of Tool and Godspeed with a lot heavier influences. The soundscapes they create are MASSIVE! Key Tracks: In Fiction, Backlit
The Big Eyeball in the Sky
The Big Eyeball in the Sky by Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains
The collaboration CD between Les Claypool and Buckethead, how can I pass it up? Having Brain on drums and Bernie Worrell on keys makes it even better. A great jam disc. Key Tracks: Buckethead, Junior
Ashes of the Wake
Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God
One of the most uncompromising bands around today. They're as heavy as it gets, and the precision of their playing is amazing. Key Tracks: Laid To Rest, Omerta, Remorse is For The Dead
Van Lear Rose
Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn
I know it seems outta place, but Im a sucker for old-school country. I heard Jack White produced this CD so I checked it out. I love it. Key Tracks: Portland, Oregon; Have Mercy
Emotive
Emotive by A Perfect Circle
A collection of covers of classic protest songs, completely re-worked by the band. 2 originals, too.  Key Tracks: What's Goin On, Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm of the War Drums
The Tipping Point
The Tipping Point by Roots, The
One of the best Hip-Hop groups around, The Roots seem to get better with every release.  Key Tracks: Don't Say Nuthin, Guns Are Drawn, Web
Encore (Deluxe Edition)
Encore (Deluxe Edition) by Eminem
Don't judge this CD by "Just Lose It". It took me a while to get into, but it reminds me of his first album in ways, and it quickly grew on me. More politics. Key Tracks: Mosh, Big Weenie, Rain Man
Probot
Probot by Probot
Probot is Dave Grohl's heavy metal side project. He wrote all of the music and got his favorite metal singers to record the vocals. It paid off. Key Tracks: Red War, Big Sky, Sweet Dreams
Odd How People Shake
Odd How People Shake by Fear Before the March of Flame
The better of 2 CD's they've released this year. I first discovered this band seeing them at Warped Tour this year. Key Tracks: Fashion Tips Baby, On the Bright Side She Could Choke.
The Revolution Starts...Now
The Revolution Starts...Now by Earle, Steve
Yet another great politically-driven CD released this year. Anyone seeing a theme yet? If you're feeling mad at Bush, get this disc. Key Tracks: Rich Man's War, F the CC, The Revolution Starts Now
Soundtrack to Your Escape
Soundtrack to Your Escape by In Flames
I heard this CD first when my buddy popped it in my car and goes "are you ready to hear the coolest riff ever?"  Good album, a step forward from last years release. Key Tracks: F(R)iend, Touch of Red
Through the Ashes of Empires
Through the Ashes of Empires by Machine Head
Another album that had me hooked by the first track alone. A lot more thechnical than I was expecting. I should probably have this ranked higher.  Key tracks: Imperium, Elegy
War Within
War Within by Shadows Fall
Revolver Magazine called this the "perfect metal album," and thats a pretty good description, as its got everything you could want. Key Tracks: The Light that Blinds, Those Who Cannot Speak
Miss Machine
Miss Machine by Dillinger Escape Plan
I haven't had this CD too long, so I haven't had the chance to get into it much yet. However, I know that if I don't put it on this list, I'll regret it later. Key Tracks: Sunshine the Werewolf
You Fail Me
You Fail Me by Converge
Same as above, I haven't had much chance to get into this one yet.  I like their sound a lot. Key tracks: You Fail Me, Dropout
The New Danger
The New Danger by Def, Mos
This CD will also grow on me some more in time. A lot of guitars and jazz on this album, very cool! Mos Def shows how eclectic he is on this album. Key Tracks: Freaky Black, Zimzallabim, Black Jack
Harmony
Harmony by Lightfoot, Gordon
I grew up listening to Gordon through my Dad.  I don't expect anyone reading this list to be into him, but i really like this disc. Key Tracks: Flyin' Blind, No Mistake About It, The No Hotel
