Neil Patrick Harris hosted a joyful edition of the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, September 20th, 2009, at which AMCs “Mad Men” and NBC’s “30 Rock” were the big winners with Alec Baldwin, Jon Cryer, Kristin Chenoweth. Mad Men picked up Outstanding Drama Series for the second year while "30 Rock" took home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series for the second time as well. Now fans of the show can take home the latest season of "30 Rock" on DVD. The BBCs period drama Little Dorrit took home seven Emmy awards. "Grey Gardens" was a shoo-in to win best TV movie .
The first 2009 Emmy disappointment was that Entourage or Weeds did not win an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Instead, the 2009 Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series was 30 Rock. The second Emmy Award 2009 that disappointed was Jon Cryer for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Many people were rooting for Kevin Dillon as "Johnny Drama" in HBOs Entourage. The drama series House was not an Emmy winner for 2009 for Outstanding Drama Series. Other disappointments were Dexter, Breaking Bad, and Big Love, however, Mad Men was the winner. For the last few years, Bill Maher has reigned as Emmys biggest loser, but now he just increased his losing streak with the defeat of "Real Time" to "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart for best variety series. Maher is a producer, so he shares in his shows latest Emmy defeat. Hes now lost 22 times without a win.
The Emmy Award, often referred to simply as the Emmy, is a television production award, similar in nature to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment, and is considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), Grammy Awards (for music) and Tony Awards (for stage). They are presented in various sectors of the television industry, including entertainment programming, news and documentary shows, and sports programming. As such, the awards are presented in various area-specific ceremonies held annually throughout the year. The best known of these ceremonies are the Primetime Emmy Awards, honoring excellence in American primetime television programming (excluding sports), and the Daytime Emmy Awards, honoring excellence in American daytime television programming.
