Saint John is the largest city in the province of New Brunswick and the oldest incorporated city in Canada. In 2001 it had a population of 69,961 and its Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) population was 122,678. It is situated along the north shore of the Bay of Fundy at the mouth of the St. John River. According to the mid-2005 census, there were 121,179 people residing in the Greater Saint John area, of whom 48.1 % were male and 51.9 % were female. Children under five accounted for approximately 5.5 % of the population. People 65 and over accounted for 13.1% of the population. In the years between 1996 and 2005, the population of Saint John declined 3.6 %.
