The city of Dover is the capital and second largest city[1] in the U.S. state of Delaware. It is also the county seat of Kent County, and the principal city of the Kent County Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Kent County. It is located on the St. Jones River in the Delaware River coastal plain. It was named by William Penn for Dover in England. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 34,288.
Dover is just off of U.S. Route 13 with the business route going through town. Other major highways are US 113 and state route 1. Dover Air Force Base is to the east of downtown, but the closes public airport is Newark. Dover is located on an old Pennsylvania Railroad line which is now served by Norfolk Southern.
