Used romance books are some of the cheapest titles you can purchase online. Almost entirely offered in paperback, these "drug store" novels can often be found for embarrassingly low prices--often they sell for less than a dollar.

Why are they so cheap? Well, publishers of modern romance novels release more new titles monthly than many other publishing houses--simply to meet the demand of fans. Because they've got such a wealth of titles in their selection, the value of used copies is low because the supply nearly always meets or exceeds the demand. However, expect to pay more for brand new releases, though you can still find deals on used romance books that are relatively fresh titles.

Over 50 million people read romance books each year and the publishing industry literally produces thousands of new titles a year. Romance books include period or historical romances, ethnic romances, paranormal and gothic romances, anthologies and more. In all these different genres, there are stars like Danielle Steel and Terri McMillian who stand out. These authors have carved their niches in the market and have published numerous successful titles and gained millions of dedicated readers in the process.

Oversaturation of the Market?
The romance genre is a multi-billion dollar business yearly. Close to 50 percent of all new fiction is romantic in nature. Writers are finding it easier to get published because of the demand being so high, but some critics think this is leading to saturation in the market of poor-quality romance. The other side to that argument, though, is that it is easier for fresh voices to be heard, constantly evolving the genre and adding new elements.
