Fictional horror stories are often centered on an evil or supernatural being that poses a threat to the book's protagonist and the world in general, making for bone-chilling reading. For those who like to feel a tingle up their spine when reading a gripping story, used horror books can be ideal. Buying used horror books is an economical way to experience the best in horror without breaking the bank--a different kind of horror altogether!

Early Horror
Since the 1960s, the term "horror" has been classified as anything gruesome or frightening. It can overlap with sci-fi and fantasy, but really has a signature style all its own. Getting a start in the 1700s, early horror books constitute a number of works, even the work of the Brothers Grimm. Although we think of their work as nursery stories and children's fiction, the actual original tales are quite gory and horrific. They featured goblins, children-eating witches and monsters scary enough to frighten even adults.

Since, horror books have found themselves covering all sorts of categories like vampires, witches, monsters like Frankenstein, ghosts, and more. Edgar Allan Poe is famous for his classic ghost stories and tales of the "undead." Modern horror books have in many cases resorted to gore and extreme violence in some situations to forcefully grab the reader's attention. While some critics pan this tactic, it can be seen as a logical extension of the genre.

However, there are used horror books out there that focus on stories first and violence second. V.C. Andrews, Clive Barker, Stephen King, and other popular fiction writers capitalize on people's love of being scared with expert style--so much so that many of the most popular titles are turned into top-grossing horror films by Hollywood. Many fans prefer the original novels, though, which are often packed with detail and have a "chill" factor that movies just can't touch!
