In America and Europe, popular first editions date from the 17th ant 18th centuries. Signed first editions are extremely valuable, depending on age, condition, and subject matter. Signed first editions are treasured by collectors worldwide. In determining their value, be sure to find out any historical significance related to the piece or author. This can dramatically increase the value, especially for famous families or military personnel--these are highly valued areas that often claim a higher appraisal. What Makes a First Edition? A first edition is a copy from the original printing. Changes to this original typesetting are not considered subsequent editions, however. They are still a part of the first edition until they are made using a different typesetting altogether. First edition, as a term, has become synonymous with "rare" and valuable," although this correlation is not necessarily accurate. Most books appear only in one edition, so often the term "first edition" is actually redundant or unnecessary. However, collectors of first editions must make this distinction because they have little use for subsequent prints or editions. Signed first editions are highly coveted. These can be actual pen-and-ink signatures, or bookplates, seals or inscriptions. Even initials, when validated by an appraiser, can make a first edition that much more valuable. Keep in mind, though, that personal inscriptions or dedications are much more valuable than book signing tour autographs. The older the edition, the higher the chances of a personal inscription.
