Reference books are those books that are utilized for research or information, such as a dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, and others. They are most often purchased for libraries. Library reference books do not circulate, however, since they are so widely used.

Reference books and sites are not limited to just these types of books, however. Other reference books can include topics like sports, medicine, law taxes and more. A reference book provides a number of things: an overview of your subject, facts about your topic, names and dates of key people and events in the field, and related articles and concepts regarding your subject of research. In addition, reference books can help clarify any misconceptions you may have about your chosen subject and they will help you streamline your research and focus on the topic at hand.

When choosing a reference book, keep the credentials of the author in mind. Are they an expert in the field? What is their educational background? You can also check for critical reviews and user reviews before investing your money (and time!) in a reference book.

If you're looking to buy reference books, such as a set of encyclopedias for a child, remember to keep the appropriate reading level in mind. While some sets are designed for younger readers, others are created with adult users in mind. Also, some will have more detailed entries, more illustrations, color photos, and so on. Take these factors into account when choosing a reference title.
