Military history publications are available through many online, government, and museum sources. Information on wars from the Crusades to the Gulf War can be found for research projects, family histories and historical lessons. Magazines, reference journals, websites and military branch offices can also be superb sources for military history information as can encyclopedias and family bibles.

If you're looking for a specific battle, try to hone in on the specific years you want and find books, offices, or websites that cater to that era. Branches of the U.S. military keep extensive records and are very well equipped to answer branch-specific questions. As well, European countries and Canada also keep accessible records for at least the last two centuries or more.

The U.S. Army maintains personnel records for those enlisted after November of 1912 and those who served after July of 1917. The U.S. Library and regional government offices also maintain databases, but some of these records don't start until after 1940. The Army also publishes casualty lists, available from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and our more recent wars.

Fiction and non-fiction books on military history are also available in thousands of bookstores and online. These books feature stories from famous soldiers like Elvis Presley and "Stormin" Norman Schwarzkopf. They also contain stories from unsung heroes like the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII and the amazing tales of POWs like Sergeant James Daley and Larry Chesley.
