Several encyclopedias will have both single editions, which will contain reduced information, as well as more involved multiple-volume collections. Information is arranged alphabetically by subject matter. Because encyclopedias are written by scholars and edited by scholars, the information they contain is safely considered accurate and legitimate. The same cannot be said of information found online, for example, where anybody is able to post whatever they want, regardless of its validity. Encyclopedias remain one of the most valuable resources in any home, whether it be for a student or for a family's general knowledge. If there is a downside to printed encyclopedias, it is that they can become outdated. When using these books, it is best to have the most current editions possible, especially if researching items or events that may have been affected by recent history. Aware of this issue, many encyclopedia publishers will offer not only a complete new volume or set every year, but also just an updated edition for far less money. If a person's research involves only matters that took place many years ago, there is less danger that the information will be inaccurate or incomplete, though this is not always the case. Scholars continue to make discoveries about events from hundreds of years ago. Either way, encyclopedias still remain the most viable and accurate initial source of information on a far-reaching array of subjects.
