Bargain textbooks can represent such a significant savings to a student that they can mean the difference between being able to study a subject and not. Textbooks, unfortunately, are some of the most expensive books on the market today. The reasons are varied, but publishers know that students across the country, and the world, are forced to purchase them for classes. The fact that the run of books is lower than a best-seller is not a reason.
Bargain textbooks come in three forms. You can find used copies, which are often made available towards the end of an academic cycle when students are selling off their books to make extra cash. The second is when a publisher decides to lower their prices for reasons of competition, or the goodness of their heart. The third, and least common, is when a textbook is published by more than one publisher, and natural market competition pushes prices down.
Bargain textbooks are most easily found when the texts themselves are works of literature, and in the public domain. The works of William Shakespeare, for example, are not only plays, but also textbooks for millions of students, and they are available very inexpensively through the right publisher. Barring literature, however, most textbooks are published by academic publishers.
Students rely on bargain textbooks to make their studies possible, and they can be found with a little due diligence. Oftentimes, newer editions will cause older editions to drop in price. It's worth checking with your instructor to see whether the updated portions are even necessary for your class; it may be that the older, cheaper edition will work just as well.
