| Wireless game controllers are nothing new. For years now, systems have had wireless controllers, but no consoles have ever boxed wireless controllers in with the systems--they've always included wired versions. But both Microsoft and Sony are bucking this trend by including wireless controllers with their Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. In the past, many wireless controllers utilized infrared technology. This required gamers to have a direct line-of-sight to a sensor so the wireless game controller could be recognized by the game. But thanks to RF and Bluetooth technology, gamers can relax in their easy chairs and play their Xbox 360s and PS3s without worrying about pointing the controller at a sensor. However, Bluetooth will only be enabled for PlayStation 3 controllers. This upgrade to its controller design was a very smart move by Sony, but perhaps a step backwards was its redesign of its popular Dual Shock controller. Instead of what most gamers would come to expect from a PlayStation controller, the PlayStation 3 wireless game controller features a new shape which unbelievably looks strikingly similar to a boomerang or a banana. Microsoft, on the other hand, didn't want to fix what wasn't broken. Instead, it only slightly changed its Type-S controller in terms of button placement, color, and technology. The wireless Xbox 360 controller utilizes radio frequencies to connect with its gaming system. Like Bluetooth, RF technology will allow gamers to sit back and enjoy their games just as they would with a wired controller, but with all of the benefits of being wireless. |
