| The longest-running PlayStation-exclusive franchise is the vehicular combat Twisted Metal (TM) series. At its heart, the franchise is a demolition derby with weapons. Gamers can choose from a variety of unique vehicles, collect weapon power-ups while driving, and fight a friend or computer opponents to the death. The first two Twisted Metal games released on the original PlayStation console were Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2: World Tour. These two games are considered by both fans and critics to be the best two entries in the series. Based on the popularity of the first two TM games, two more sequels were developed, neither of which struck a chord with fans or critics. The first two TM games were developed by SingleTrac for Sony. After the release of TM: World Tour, SingleTrac left Sony and joined GT Interactive. Not wanting to let the franchise die, Sony's in-house developer 989 Studios created TM 3 and 4, both of which are no longer considered by fans to be official Twisted Metal games. In 2001, original SingleTrac employees left GT Interactive to form Incognito Entertainment, which then signed with Sony. Sony quickly had the team develop a new TM game, titled Twisted Metal: Black. This game was the first of the series to be given a Mature rating due to its especially violent and dark content. After TM: Black, a kid-friendly version of Twisted Metal was released for the original PlayStation entitled Twisted Metal: Small Brawl. In addition, Twisted Metal: Black was re-released and allowed gamers to play online with each other. A PSP version was even released, subtitled Head-On, which is sure to hold fans over until an inevitable PS3 version of Twisted Metal is released sometime in the near future. |
