TV shows on VHS never quite caught on as well as TV on DVD has, and for a number of reasons. For one, the cost was always quite high for what you were getting. The space was another issue. A box set of a single season of a television show often required about 10 VHS tapes, which took up a lot of real estate in most living rooms, especially if you were to collect multiple seasons.
DVDs have eliminated this problem, and now an entire series of a television show can be squeezed on as little as two DVDs, or up to six or more for larger seasons. Another advantage to TV on DVD compared to VHS is bonus material. When you purchase a season of your favorite television program on DVD, you're treated to things like commentary tracks and deleted scenes. What's more, there's no need to fast forward to your favorite episodes--simply choose them from the menu, then sit back and relax.
Because TV shows on VHS weren't very popular with consumers, not many shows had full season sets available. This is not the case with DVD. In fact, TV on DVD has become such a huge seller for the studios, they're now putting out entire series sets of many older, classic shows, along with cult favorites and popular cartoons. Even TV shows currently airing receive DVD treatment as soon as a season ends and right before a new one begins.
If you enjoy watching syndicated versions of your favorite shows, you will be pleasantly surprised if you watch them on DVD. To make TV networks as much money as possible, syndicated versions of television shows are often truncated to make more room for commercials. When a TV show is released on DVD, there's a good chance that these edits have been restored, giving you the original cuts of the shows that you have grown to love.
