| The release of Tony Hawk's Underground (THUG) marked a significant change to the popular skateboarding video game franchise. Prior to THUG, the majority of the games in the series relied on completing goals, scoring points, and finding hidden items scattered throughout levels. THUG, however, was heavily driven by story, and in many respects resembled a role-playing game combined with a sports title. In Tony Hawk's Underground, players must create their own characters by taking on the persona of an unknown skater from New Jersey. As the player progresses through the game and becomes a better and more popular skater, he leaves the United States for exotic locales like Moscow and Vancouver. Along the way, the player will meet real-life skaters like Stacy Peralta and Chad Muska as he makes a name for himself and works towards becoming a professional skater. New to the THUG game was the ability to walk around carrying your skateboard in addition to riding it. This was necessary to reach certain points and challenges in the game to continue along with the story. It also allowed gamers to perform the Caveman move, which had players leave their boards and move on foot to continue a combo within a certain time limit. The original Tony Hawk's Underground game was released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance systems in 2003. A sequel was released the following year, appropriately titled THUG 2. After THUG 2, the Tony Hawk franchise changed names once again with the sequel Tony Hawk's American Wasteland for the Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, GameCube, and Nintendo DS gaming systems. |
