| The Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series was created by Tom Clancy and is a third-person stealth action game franchise. Unlike many other games which rely on players blasting their way through a never-ending stream of enemies, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell requires gamers to be patient, take their time, and plan out their movements carefully. If an enemy is killed and the body isn't disposed of properly, alarms are triggered when others discover the cadaver, potentially putting the mission in jeopardy. In the first three Splinter Cell games, players take on the role of Sam Fisher. Sam was the first splinter cell, which is an agent of Third Echelon of the National Security Agency. Splinter cells have a fifth freedom, which is the freedom to do whatever is necessary to preserve national security and peace for the United States of America. Unfortunately, there is a catch with this freedom. If a member becomes captured or dies while in the field, the government will deny any knowledge of the splinter cell and deny their involvement in any of his actions. Due to this, it's necessary for splinter cells to have razor-sharp instincts and to move invisibly and undetected--just like a splinter of glass. The first three Splinter Cell games all share a basic storyline: terrorists are threatening the United States with weapons of mass destruction, and Sam Fisher must do what's necessary to stop them. A sequel is currently in development which is sure to continue this pattern. And, like many video game franchises that came before it, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is also currently in production as a live-action Hollywood film. With the screenplay in the hands of a writer from the first three Splinter Cell games, the film version is certain to contain all of the elements that made the video game franchise so successful. |
