| The Sims is another entry in the wildly popular Sims series of games, developed by Will Wright and published by Maxis. Other titles in this franchise include the groundbreaking Sim City and its sequels, Sim Earth, and Sim Tower. In previous Sims games, players had to create their own cities or apartment complexes, but The Sims has gamers building the lives of characters. A good way to describe The Sims is as a virtual dollhouse. Players take control of a person and help them along with the mundane aspects of life, such as eating, bathing, and sleeping. Unlike previous Sims games, though, The Sims doesn't have a definitive objective--players simply create a character and treat it as a virtual pet of sorts. Since its release in 2000, The Sims has become a runaway hit, breaking into the mainstream and selling over six million copies. With such success, it was inevitable that the series would be milked for all it was worth. Numerous expansion packs added new elements to the game, such as pets, new objects and players, and the ability to take in-game characters on vacations or to meet others for romantic encounters. In addition to expansion packs, The Sims spawned an online version of the game and a sequel. This is wonderful news for any Sims addict, but purchasing all of these games and add-ons can get quite expensive. To offset the cost and to continue supporting their "habit," many Sims fans use sell off expansion packs they've exhausted and pick up affordably priced used versions they haven't tried yet. |
