| "Teen Titans" was an animated TV show based on a DC comic book of the same name. The show aired on the Cartoon Network and featured a group of young superheroes who lived together in a place called Titans Tower. The "Teen Titans" included Raven, Beast Boy, Star Fire, Robin, and Cyborg. Together, this misfit group of superheroes battled evil, which came ready-made in the form of a series of dastardly villains. The "Teen Titans" comic was darker and more adult than the "Teen Titans" TV show. Some fans of the comic book criticized the TV show for "losing its edge" and for relying on so-called anime-style animation. One case in point was that the TV theme show to "Teen Titans" came in both a Japanese and an English version. There was no one archvillain to challenge the "Teen Titans." In this way, the series set itself apart from traditional superhero shows, in which heroes need to cooperate to fight outside forces. Indeed, bickering among the "Teen Titans" was almost constant. The series veered away from the "good against evil" caricatures which often define standard animated TV fare. Of course, during some of the later episodes, the Titans did come up against the so-called Brotherhood of Evil, a network devoted to wreaking havoc on the world. Interestingly, no single character led the "Teen Titans" band. That said, many fans believe that Robin was the de facto leader. The character Robin was loosely based on the original portrayal of Robin from the Batman comic series. DC comic executives insist that "Teen Titan" Robin was actually a composite of several incarnations of Batman's sidekick. "Teen Titan" collectibles are relatively easy to find at auction. Focus on gathering complete toys sets--some toy villains (particularly from Seasons One and Two) may be tough to locate. |
