| Super Mario's first appearance in a video game wasn't in the original Mario Bros. like many people think. In fact, Mario was the character that gamers jumped over barrels thrown at them by a giant gorilla in Donkey Kong--a game that predates Mario Bros. But back then, Mario wasn't known as Mario. Instead, he was known simply as Jumpman. Mario and Luigi made their first appearance together in Mario Bros. This was a successful game at the time, but it was Super Mario Bros. that really helped launch Mario to superstardom. He has since become Nintendo's mascot, one of the most recognizable characters in video games. His games have sold over 180,000,000 copies, making Mario the biggest-selling game franchise in history. Since Mario's first appearance, his background information has changed over time. In the original Donkey Kong video game, he was a carpenter. In Mario Bros., he and his brother were both plumbers, which fit in with the pipe theme that was present in the game. In this same title, it was said that the two brothers cleaned sewers in Brooklyn. Many believed that this was their hometown, but newer games reveal that they grew up in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom. When it comes to Mario, one thing is for certain: if Nintendo releases a new console, it will have a number of Mario games released for it. Recent Nintendo systems like the GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and DS all have multiple Mario titles available, including sequels to the popular Mario Kart series. Nintendo's next console, the Revolution, will continue this trend, as Mario games have already been announced for this next-generation system. |
