The sub woofer (or sub) is the speaker in your audio system
responsible for producing great bass. Subwoofers usually have a cone
diameter of eight to 15 inches (a 12 subwoofer is a particularly popular
size, offered by most mainstream brands such as Kicker). They can help
reproduce the lower octaves of music that are not typically picked up by
a car audio system. The largest speaker found in most car sound systems
is about 6.5'' in diameter. A speaker that small does not have the power
to play distinctive bass notes.
First, decide where in your car you'll put your car sub woofer. Most
people usually put them into an enclosure in the trunk. However, by
using special enclosures, you can install woofers under the car seats or
in the side panels.
You'll also need to choose the type of subwoofer that's best for your
car audio system. You will have a choice between single voice coil,
which has one set of terminals, and dual voice coil, which has two sets
of terminals. Dual voice coil subwoofers supply you with significantly
more wiring options than single voice coil models. In most cases, dual
voice coil models are built for higher-power handling as well as a
higher level of performance.
The sound quality of your subwoofer is also dependent on its
enclosure. Different boxes produce different types of sound. If you want
deep, precise bass, go with a sealed box. Use a vented, ported box for
more forceful bass. Now, make your choice, and bring on the bass!
