The amazing Spider-Man's first appearance in a video game was
very early on. It was in 1982 that he was featured in the Atari
2600 video game Spider-Man. Over the years, he has been
featured in a number of video games, from his own headlining
titles to special "guest appearances" in many others. On the
original PlayStation console, two 3D titles were released,
titled Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
respectively. What's interesting about these two games is that
they were both developed by Neversoft using a similar engine it
used to create its popular Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series
of video games. In the second Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
game, Neversoft included Spider-Man as a secret character that
players could unlock and skate with.
To coincide with the release of the 2002 Spider-Man
movie, Acclaim released Spider-Man, the first Spider-Man
game to appear on all major consoles of the time. In 2002,
Acclaim continued this trend by bringing out Spider-Man 2
to correspond with the release of the movie sharing the name.
Both of these Spider-Man games garnered the same success and
critical acclaim as their movie counterparts.
Based off the Ultimate Spider-Man comic books, the
Ultimate Spider-Man video game updated the franchise again.
Unlike previous Spider-Man video games, this version is cel-shaded
to give the video game a look that's similar to that of a comic
book. Again, players can take on the identity of
superhero/mild-mannered Daily Bugle photographer Peter Parker,
but the cel-shading sets this game apart from earlier versions. |
