| Originally, the Sony PlayStation was developed by Sony at the request of Nintendo as a CD-ROM peripheral for its Super Nintendo Entertainment System. For one reason or another, Nintendo also approached Philips to develop the same accessory. At first, Sony considered abandoning its research, but instead, decided to invest the time and energy developing its first full-fledged console. In 1994, Sony released its PlayStation console and it was an instant success. This was thanks in large part to the amazing lineup of games that were available at the console's launch. Titles developed by Namco were especially popular, including Battle Arena Toshinden and Ridge Racer. Both of these titles sold so well that numerous sequels were released for the Sony PlayStation console. Other popular Sony PlayStation games include the Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Gran Turismo series of video games, each also spawning numerous sequels for the console. For many people, it was one of these titles that inspired them to purchase the PlayStation system. Such acclaimed game series helped Sony sell over 100 million consoles since its release--incredible numbers for Sony's first foray into the home console world. In 2000, Sony released a variant of the PlayStation console called the PS One. This was a compact unit that was much smaller in size than the original PlayStation system. An LCD add-on was also introduced for the PS One, which allowed gamers to take the minuscule system on the road with them. This could be seen as Sony testing the handheld waters with a semi-portable console, and foreshadowed the eventual release of its PlayStation Portable System. |
