The Sony Handycam was the first camcorder designed specifically to fit in the palm of the user's hand. Until its release, most video cameras had been rather bulky, shoulder-mounted contraptions that recorded directly to VHS. Over the years, the Handycam has evolved from using analog formats such as VHS-C and Hi8, to digital solutions such as MiniDV and DVD.
Although recording formats may have changed, one motivating factor of the Sony Handycam has not: creating a convenient and portable, high-quality camcorder solution. Does the smaller size mean that quality has been compromised? The answer to that question is both yes and no, as it depends on the model you choose. Obviously, the smaller camera body limits some of the mechanics within the camera, but with shrinking CCDs and improved designs, the Handycams of today are far more powerful than those of only a few years ago.
In its continuing effort to maximize the convenience of their Handycams, Sony has recently begun releasing a line of DVD camcorders. With traditional tape becoming obsolete, an increasing number of consumers have been demanding an easier and more effective way to store and play their home videos. These Handycams work exactly like their older counterparts, with one major exception: they record information directly to inexpensive DVD-Rs that can be played on standard players and home computers.
With High Definition becoming the latest standard in broadcasting and television, Sony once again pioneered the next revolution in camcorders. Its latest line of high-end Handycams includes a new format known as HDV. Cameras such as their HDR-HC1 have been among the first to offer the amazing picture resolution of HD in the compact format Sony Handycams are known for.
