Skin care products create billions of dollars in revenue worldwide every year. Anti-aging products, moisturizers, sun care protection and acne treatment products all specialize in treating specific skin conditions for individual needs. As 78 million baby boomers come of retirement age in the US alone, the most lucrative of these skin care genres is anti-aging treatments.Anti-aging products make endless claims, but when it comes down to it, most come with one of the following ingredients: alpha-hydroxy acids, Retin or Retinol A, retinoids, estrogens, vitamin C and vitamin C derivatives. Alpha-hydroxy technology has been around for decades and is present in thousands of skin care products that focus on anti-aging. These products take advantage of the acid's strong exfoliating factor.
Basically, the concentration of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) makes the product more or less effective. In glycolic peels, AHA can be used in up to a 50 percent concentration and has been proven to significantly reduce the signs of aging (wrinkles, fine lines, etc.). However, most over-the-counter facial creams with AHA only have concentrations of five to 15 percent. Instead of buying the most expensive one, it's a better idea to compare percentages of AHA and go with the highest concentration for the most dramatic results. Keep in mind, though, that it is an acid, so irritation is more likely at higher concentrations.
Other Skin Care Products
Moisturizers with SPF (sun protection factor) are extremely popular nowadays with sun overexposure causing worries about skin cancer. A good recommendation is a moisturizer with at least SPF 30 for normal skin. A higher SPF may be needed for fair or burn-prone skin. Adult acne products are also selling well, with successful products treating the oil production now instead of just topical acne breakouts.
