Sanyo was founded in 1947 by a former employee of Matsushita and was incorporated in 1950. The name means "three oceans" in Japanese, making reference to the founder's desire to sell its products across three oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian.

Today, Sanyo manufactures a wide variety of electronic devices, including home appliances, batteries, semiconductors, and cell phones. Sanyo's cell phones are solely manufactured for Sprint PCS. Its phones have a few qualities in common: sensible design, sturdy construction, and long battery life. Most of the phones are flip phones.
