| The PlayStation 2 had a lot going for it when it was first released. Its predecessor was the winner of the previous era's console wars, and everyone was anticipating the system's release. Its main competition at the time--the Sega Dreamcast--looked rather lackluster in comparison to the new Sony system. It would never have some of the killer titles that the PS2 would and it couldn't play DVDs, as the Dreamcast was still using antiquated CD-ROM technology. Like many people predicted, the PS2 went on to become the most popular console of its generation. Microsoft's Xbox put up a good fight and did have some acclaimed exclusive titles, but that wasn't enough to push it into the lead. Now, over five years after the system's release, the PS2 is home to some of the era's best-selling and most popular games, such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Those that haven't yet jumped on the PS2 bandwagon but are considering it will find the newest, slimmer version of the Sony PlayStation 2 very appealing. As far as looks go, the two systems look identical. The only difference is their sizes: the newer version of the PS2 is much smaller and is roughly the size of a case that PlayStation 2 games come in. With the release of the PS3, PlayStation 2 consoles--both old and new versions--along with games are dropping in prices. This makes it one of the best times for people to dive into the PlayStation 2 world. Many people are now selling off their pre-owned systems and games, allowing other gamers to buy their unwanted items at incredibly low prices. |
