As you can imagine, it's been a long ride. Since the 1970s, however, when the company first began to be interested in telecommunications, their success has been steady. In the mid-1990s, Nokia (the company is named after an eponymous town in Finland) began to focus almost exclusively on their telecommunication's output. Nokia phones come in a variety of shells, and display a range of different features, depending, of course, on price. These include simple hand-helds like the Nokia 2116i, as well as more developed models like the elaborate 7280 (dubbed, for its tiny size, sleek style, and powerful camera "The Going Out Phone"). The Nokia 7280 is one of the more high-end cell-phones on the market today. With its innovative keyless dial, and combination video/still-camera capabilities, it is as much an accessory as a phone. It also utilizes a highly-developed voice recognition feature to minimize finger-time. Most distinctive is the phone shell itself, which is tall, thin, and shaped more like a small candy bar than your average shell phone. Recently, Nokia has gotten into the hand-held gaming industry. Its platform is called the N-Gage. Designed specially for gamers, this unit combines the features of a mobile phone and a hand-held gaming unit in a single package. Its wireless multiplayer gaming capability and luscious 3-D graphics have made it an early favorite in this still-fledgling crossover industry.
