| Certainly one of the most popular gaming consoles of all time was the original Nintendo Entertainment System. For many people, this was the console that introduced them to home video game systems. The Nintendo NES is far more than that, though, as Nintendo set the standard of video game console design when it created the original NES system. Before the Nintendo NES was released, the typical input device for a video game system was a joystick with one or two buttons. Nintendo created the handheld game pad and revolutionized the video game world in the process. Not all of its original NES accessories were such great successes, though. Look back on many of them today and you will realize just how ridiculous they actually were. The Power Glove is one such peripheral. Even though it cost $100 at the time of its release--a hefty investment in the '80s--only one game (Super Glove Ball) was developed specifically for the Power Glove. Another Nintendo NES oddity was the Robotic Operating Buddy, or R.O.B. for short. This accessory would respond to flashes of light from the player's television set by moving its arms and hands. Only two games were released that were compatible with the R.O.B.: Gyromite which came bundled with the accessory, and Stack-Up. Today, 20 years after the system was first released, many classic gamers continue to enjoy their original Nintendo Entertainment Systems--and yes, even the Power Glove and R.O.B. Buying, trading, and selling games and accessories for the original Nintendo console has become a big business. Anyone can find vintage Nintendo systems, games, or accessories, allowing them to build their classic game collections easily and affordably. |
