| NES stands for Nintendo Entertainment System, which was a home video game console that Nintendo released in 1985. This wasn't Nintendo's first home video game system per se, but it was its first console to feature removable cartridges. The original NES helped set standards of what a home gaming system should be and became the most successful gaming console of its time. One of the most popular games released for the NES was Super Mario Bros., which was also the game that came bundled with the system. This is considered to be the system's killer title--the game which inspired people to purchase the console. Even today, over 20 years after the console's release, this title is still a fan favorite and considered to be one of the classic video games of all time. The popularity of the NES and its games grew up to and beyond the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The SNES, for short, was a 16-bit gaming console while the original NES was only 8-bit. Even with the popularity of the SNES flourishing, Nintendo continued to release NES games up until 1995--four years after the release of the Super Nintendo system. Even today, the popularity of these two gaming systems continues to thrive. People who grew up with these two consoles either still have their original systems from when they were children, or purchase them used for a little bit of nostalgic gaming. Even players who grew up during the original PlayStation generation are familiarizing themselves with vintage gaming on Nintendo's classic 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. |
