| Thanks to movies like The Fast and the Furious, street racing broke into the mainstream and won over a slew of new fans in the process. It was inevitable that video game developers would cash in on the success of the sport, and one of the first to do so was Angel Studios when it released the first entry in the Midnight Club series of games in 2000. In the first Midnight Club game, players start off with a somewhat plain and slow-moving vehicle. By participating in late-night races held in New York, players gain better, faster cars, thus increasing their chances of winning more races. As they progress through the underworld, they can leave the United States and head to London for international street racing competitions. Midnight Club 2 featured more of the same, but allowed gamers to race in cities inspired by Los Angeles, Paris, and Tokyo, and its online component enabled online races with human components over Xbox Live or via GameSpy.com for PS2 players. Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition is perhaps the best entry in the series thus far, with real licensed vehicles and a heavy emphasis on customization in addition to street racing. The only home console that the original Midnight Club was released on was the PS2, but this changed with its sequels. Midnight Club 2 and 3 are both available for the PS2 and Xbox home systems. For gaming on the go, handheld versions of the Midnight Club series of games were ported to both the Game Boy Advance and PSP portable consoles. |
