A number of companies makes
servers that will work on a Linux platform, and your Linux
server can run at a number of speeds and configurations. HP
makes a number of servers, most notably in the Blade line,
that work with the Linux operating system. Some operate with
Intel Xeon processors, and some with AMD. These servers can
be used as a Linux mail server or a Linux file server, among
other applications.
Regardless of what operating system is
running your server, you want security and scalability, as
well as speed, performance and reliability. Fortunately,
many server manufacturers are making their servers to
operate with options to use multiple processors, as well as
designing these servers with more ports and troubleshooting
features. Many entry-level servers that are on the market
now can actually be scaled up to operate as mid-range
servers.
Tyan makes the Transport GS12, which supports Windows and
Linux. This server runs an Intel Pentium 4 processor, and
can support 4GB of memory. Tyan also offers the Transport
GT24, which can be used as a dedicated Linux server.
Linux is an operating system that appeals to a lot of
people who appreciate its power and flexibility. Former UNIX
users are finding that switching to Linux allows them more
access to software and hardware. Fortunately, it's
relatively easy to find servers that work with a number of
operating systems, including Linux.
