A laser printer has certain
advantages over an inkjet printer. For one thing, laser
printers are speedier than their inky counterparts, and the
lines can be crisper. However, modern inkjet printers have
evolved so dramatically that a top-of-the-line model will
print text and graphics that are indistinguishable from
laser printing.
There is an initial price difference
between the two types of machines. Laser printers are more
expensive to buy, but not as expensive to keep up,
especially given the cost of cartridge refills. Inkjet
printers need their cartridges replaced much more
frequently, so in the long run the laser printer ink can be
more economical.
Offices often prefer to use laser printers so that print
jobs can be executed as quickly as possible without creating
a backlog. If you are a personal user or have a home office,
you may not need a laser printer unless you print a lot of
documents that you want to look as professional as possible.
The ease of maintenance of a laser printer may appeal to
you, however.
Like microprocessors, DVD drives, and other high-tech
components and accessories, the prices of good laser
printers, even color laser printers, continue to drop. Now,
what was once a high-end accessory that was only feasible
for office use is found in many homes and home offices.
Given the mechanical precision of laser printing and the
lower cost of maintenance, these machines are really
beginning to dominate the industry. Choosing a Brother laser
printer or an HP laser printer is a good introduction to the
laser printer market.
