| When the Xbox was released in late 2001, gamers were initially apprehensive about the new system. Eventually the superior performance and graphics helped to win them over. Helping win them over, too, were the games unique to the Xbox. Of these games, perhaps none was more important than Halo. Halo, in each of its incarnations, has been hailed for its deep storylines, use of vehicles, and multi-player capabilities. There have also been a series of novels that, at least in part, explain the story between the games. A feature film is currently in the development stages. The game Halo spent a number of years in development. At first, it was to have been released as a real-time strategy game for Apple and PC computers. When Microsoft purchased the developer (Bungie), the game eventually transformed into a first-person shooter game. Microsoft released Halo as an exclusive game for the Xbox (although later it was ported to both Microsoft XP and Mac OS X computers). The story is relatively simple. The protagonist, known only as Master Chief, is stranded on a donut-shaped space station, the titular Halo. While he battles for survival, he must also discover the secrets of the station. Critics have hailed Halo as one of the best and most influential first-person shooter games of all time. Edge magazine, normally reluctant to overly praise games, gave Halo a perfect 10 out of 10 score. Halo has been criticized, however, for repetitive gameplay. The game is also relatively simple to learn, so players can enjoy it pretty much right out of the box. |
