| Half Life is one of the most
popular, most appreciated, and most well-reviewed video games of
the last decade. Originally released in 1998, the game was
considered a revolutionary step forward in gaming. Even today,
Half Life continues to receive recognition by top independent
gaming reviewers as an Editor Choice and Recommended Pick.
Here's the basic story. You're Gordon Freeman, a Black Mesa
Research Facility scientist. Dangerous experiments are being
conducted here, and sooner than you can say "Captain Tripps",
things go wrong. Pretty soon, creatures that were better off
behind hermetically sealed glass walls are sneaking around the
place, creating mayhem. And it's up to you to stop them.
The story itself is considered to be pretty good--but it's
the storytelling that gets the standing ovation here. The
monsters are smart, and make excellent foes. The environment is
lushly presented. And there's a lot of effort put into the
game's reality. For example, power ups aren't just placed
willy-nilly--they're located in logical spots, like near a
weapons plant. Plus, the deeper you get into the game, and the
further you go from urban centers, the more difficult it becomes
to find and acquire weapons, fuel, food, etc.
In 2004, Half Life 2 was released and was considered a
faithful follow-up to the award-winning original. The plot line
picks up immediately after the conclusion of the original Half
Life. The second game garnered great praise for animation,
narration, sound, and artificial intelligence. Half Life 2:
Episode 1 (Formerly called "Aftermath") is due to be released in
June 2006, and will pick up where Half Life 2 ended. It is
eagerly awaited, and advance reviews suggest that fans will not
be disappointed. |
