The term "guitar tab" refers to sheet music for guitar written in tablature form. Tablature is a way of representing how a piece of music is to be performed by denoting strings and frets, rather than notes, as in conventional staff notation. The six line staff of a guitar tab corresponds to the six strings of the guitar, and the numbers on the lines refer to the frets to be depressed by the player.A lot of popular music for the guitar is published in tablature form, partly because it is easier and more intuitive for most guitar players to read than note-based staff notation. Since guitar tabs visually represent to players where they should place their fingers, even beginning guitar players can learn how to reproduce their favorite songs relatively quickly. There are certain variations in how guitar tabs are presented; some guitar tabs, for example, are based on chord notations rather than string and fret notations.
Sometimes guitar tablature is also presented in conjunction with traditional staff notation. Sets of guitar tabs for a particular artist, band, or musical style are typically collected into a single songbook. For example, one could purchase a book of guitar tabs for Beatles songs, or a book of guitar tabs for country music hits by various artists.
Guitar tabs are available for most types of music, including classical guitar tablature, Christian, and jazz music. Bass guitar tablature is also available. Because guitar tablature is easy to learn to read, guitar tabs are also frequently presented in conjunction with instructional material that teaches new players basic guitar technique.
