| RenderWare's Grand Theft Auto San
Andreas was the much anticipated follow-up to Grand Theft Auto:
Vice City. Set in a spoof of 1990's San Francisco called San
Andreas California, the game follows the exploits of a
protagonist named Carl Johnson as he reconnects with his
homeland gang. Like other previous GTA versions, GTA San Andreas
features daring single player action and driving possibilities.
The ESRB Rating Board declared the game adults only, and this
rating switch led some distributors to suspend sales. During
the course of game play, Carl has run-ins with a vengeful
brother named Sweet, a dirty cop named Tenpenny, and traitors
from his gang. The world of San Andreas is richly detailed and
features 1990s soundtracks. Several metropolises are connected
by the Brown Streak Railroad, and the designer's recapitulation
of the 1992 world of incendiary politics is a dark commentary on
American race relations at the time.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas even has riots recalling the
race riots that seized Los Angeles following the Rodney King
trial. Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar North collaborated to
develop a copy of the game that received a mature rating from
the ESRB board. This copy, known as the Cold Coffee version,
sold well. However, the so-called Hot Coffee patch also did
brisk business with adults.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas can be played on a Windows
based PC, the Xbox, or the PlayStation 2. Other future Grand
Theft titles include Sin City, Bogota, Tokyo, and Grand Theft
Auto VI. |
