In the guitar world, or more specifically in the rock-and-roll guitar world, there are a few big names that stand out as "classics." Gibson is perhaps one of the most well-known and well-loved guitar manufacturers in the business, and anyone who has played guitar for any length of time knows about the world-renowned Les Paul model. The Gibson Guitar Corporation was started by Orville Gibson back in 1902. He initially made mandolins, incorporating a unique and beautiful design that made the instruments easier to produce. It was not until 1936 that Gibson created what is generally referred to as the first electric guitar, the Electric Spanish ES-150.
In 1952, however, Gibson truly made its mark on the guitar world by teaming up with popular jazz guitar musician Les Paul to create the iconic Les Paul Gibson guitar. This Gibson guitar features a beautiful golden sunburst finish and a "set" neck, as opposed to the bolt on neck used by other major guitar manufacturers. Gibson designed the Les Paul to be a luxury guitar that is beautiful to both the eyes and the ears.
The original Les Paul model had two single-coil pickups, but this was later changed to more versatile "humbucker" style pickups. Humbuckers are double-coil pickups that essentially negate the "hum" associated with their single-coil cousins, hence the term "hum" bucking. Though Les Paul Gibsons are some of the most sought-after guitars on the market, you can find a variety of Les Pauls, both new and used, available for purchase.
