| Genealogy is the science of
family history. For most people, knowing "where they came
from" is very important. Especially for lovers of history,
it's quite breathtaking to imagine one is descended from
kings and princes, from pirates or highway robbers. Are you
the descendant of Vikings? Are you a Plantagenet? Was your
great-great grandmother a slave? If English, in the War of
the Roses, were your colors red or white?
Luckily, there are an increasing number of resources
available to the genealogy hobbyist on the Internet. There
are an abundance of message boards dedicated to certain
surnames, where distant relatives can share tidbits of
information on their shared histories. No matter what corner
of the world you may be from, chances are you can find some
information about your ancestors online.
There are also a number of useful guides and resources to
help you hunt down your family information. Books, videos,
and how-to guides are all available detailing how to begin,
where to look for missing pieces of information, and how to
keep detailed records. What may seem like family legend or
an inconsequential anecdote told by your grandmother may
turn out to be just the puzzle piece you need to find your
great-grandfather's arrival records from Ellis Island or
your grandmother's birth certificate.
The journey to your past will take time, but it will be
well spent and extraordinarily rewarding. Knowing your
family's past is a gift you give not only to yourself, but
to your children, nieces, and nephews, which they too can
pass on for future generations. The idea of researching your
genealogy can be exciting and fun, but overwhelming.
However, it is important to remember, just like any other
wonderful and fulfilling project, just take it one step at a
time, and you will be amazed at the places genealogy will
take you. |
