Fragrance

When you are looking at the different types of designer fragrance, it's important to know what the different names mean, since each has a unique effect. You'll encounter "perfume," "eau de parfum," "cologne," and "eau de toilette" sprays. These are not just different names for the same thing--the different names actually refer to difference in the concentration of the scent and the solution in which the oil is contained.

Perfume contains the highest concentration of scented oil. There is anywhere from a 20 to 50 percent compound, which means that you need to use very little perfume, and it will last for hours at a potency similar to when you first put it on. An eau de parfum contains 10 to 15 percent of the oils in an alcoholic compound, meaning that it is less overpowering while still being potent.

Eau de toilette is significantly less strong, and is typically about five to eight percent aromatic in an oil and water base. It doesn't last anywhere near as long as perfume, and can be used throughout the day to refresh your scent. If you want to spray a scent in your hair, on your clothing, or on your sheets, you'd probably want to use a spritz of eau de toilette.

Cologne is the weakest of all scents. It is usually only two to five percent of the fragrance, and the solution is both alcohol and water. Colognes are typically after-bath splashes. If you have a favorite fragrance, check to see what forms it comes in. If you find all of these varieties too strong, you may find that the scented body lotion most designers offer is the best choice for you.
