| You would like to purchase some home weightlifting equipment, but you don't have the budget for one of those fancy machines. You will probably settle for dumbbells although you think you would get a better workout on a machine. Think again! Many experts believe that dumbbell training is actually more effective than machine-based training. Dumbbell strength training is usually referred to as "free weight training." Working out with dumbbells has some distinct advantages over traditional resistance machines. Since you don't have all sorts of seat belts and artificial stabilizers when you workout with dumbbells, your core muscles, which are your natural stabilizers, are greatly engaged. A dumbbell workout allows you to train in natural movements patterns. You will also have a greater range of motion in a dumbbell workout, which will give you a wider variety of exercises to choose from. If you are training for a specific sport, you can create dumbbell workouts that mimic the movement patterns of that sport. You can also multi-task during a dumbbell workout. For example, you can perform lunges and bicep curls simultaneously. Dumbbell exercises make it possible to integrate strength training with balance training, by performing some of the exercises on a stability ball. In fact, if you can not afford a dumbbell set and a weight bench, a stability ball is a great option! In choosing a set of dumbbells for home use, be sure to choose a wide range of weights. You will be progressing gradually. If the weights are not heavy enough, you will reach a training plateau. You will also want to pay attention to the type of grip that the dumbbell has. In recent years, dumbbells have been featuring ergonomic designs. If you are concerned with aesthetics, some lines of dumbbells actually come in pastel colors. However, these are usually lighter weights. Don't sacrifice a decent workout for a pretty colored weight. |
