The digital Nikon SLR D-70 is a quality, moderately priced camera that at least according to many reviews, well outperforms its in-class peer, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. The dramatic color accuracy, anti-noise technology, and the sturdy body of the Nikon SLR D-70 all combine to deliver an effortlessly useable amateur camera. Its manual zoom and focus will let you cultivate a personal style without having to resort to automatic settings all the time.
There are some drawbacks to the digital Nikon SLR D-70. If you want to edit your RAW file data, you have to purchase additional software. You also should get some extra memory for you camera. A Microdrive or CompactFlash card with a rather large capacity--between 250 MB and 1 GB--should suffice to hold a very large catalog of pictures. The batteries which come standard with the D-70 should last for awhile, but you may want to invest in rechargeables.
You can attach a number of lenses to improve the output of your camera. The Nikon line does not offer nearly as many lens options as the Canon line does. That said, even if you employ the D-70 without any exotic lenses, you will still get quality performance time and again. As with its counterparts, the Canon Digital Rebel and Digital Rebel XT, the D-70 performs quickly thanks in large part to a whip fast internal processor.
Due to its performance and workmanship, the Nikon D-70 is often compared to "higher class" models, such as the Canon EOS 10-D and the Nikon D-100. Depending on your purposes, you may want to experiment with different manual settings, but bear in mind that the D-70 only lets you save a single set of custom parameters at one time.
