There are various types of
computer memory, but what most people are concerned with is
RAM. Random access memory is what allows you to quickly
access enough memory for the applications you are running,
rather than running them from the hard drive memory. If you
do not have the RAM to support the needs of your
applications, you will experience very slow processing
times--if you can run the applications at all.
This is why
people routinely add RAM to their systems: so that they
don't "out-use" their computers. The process is simple: you
simply add memory chips into the slots on the motherboard.
However, you need to ascertain the type of memory your
system uses. This information will typically be in your
manual.
Some of the RAM types include SDRAM, SODIMM, and RAMBUS.
These are simply different types of memory configurations.
The most important thing to know is which type of RAM is
compatible with your computer. When you buy the right memory
and install it, your system should automatically acknowledge
the upgrade.
Every system will have a maximum memory that it can hold,
so the most you want to buy is the difference between what
the system can take and what you already have installed. If
you are looking to buy a new system, make sure it can hold
the memory you need to perform your favorite applications.
Also, be aware that some systems can be upgraded one memory
module at a time, while others need to be upgraded two or
four at a time.
