So you're not satisfied with the factory-installed car radio that
came with your vehicle? It's not surprising. Many people choose to
upgrade either their entire stereo system, or individual speaker
components. Some customized systems will require you to cut your car's
factory panels; be sure to check on this before making a purchase if you
are uncomfortable with making this modification.
First, determine how much money you want to spend on your car stereo
system. Are you going to buy an entire system, or only a few components?
No matter what you decide, you need a high quality source. Even premier
speakers won't be able to help you if your head unit can't put out the
sound quality you're looking for. If you're on a budget and looking for
discount car audio, stay away from flashy designs whose price tag likely
includes a markup for trendy design. Amplifiers, subwoofers, and rear
speakers can always be added in later. Concentrate on the head unit and
the speakers that will be going in the front of the vehicle. Major
brands like Kenwood, Alpine, and Pioneer offer multiple ranges of head
units, so your budget doesn't have to limit your selection.
Make a note of any things you'll need to watch out for with your car
stereo. Are there odd-shaped openings for speakers? Is your car actually
designed to accommodate after-market systems? If you have questions
about any of this, it's best to leave the installation of your system to
a professional. Another benefit of paying for professional installation
is the possibility of an extended warranty. Some manufacturers will
offer greater warranty privileges if you pay an authorized installer
rather than doing it yourself.
Choose a stereo that comes with a built-in power source, and four
channels that can drive four speakers. If you do plan on installing an
amp, choose a stereo that has low-level outputs. Otherwise, a stereo
with high-level outputs is preferable. Finally, keep in mind the
preferences of your back-seat riders. For their sake, select a stereo
with a fader so you can adjust the volume of the front and rear
speakers.
