If you are a music lover and spend a good deal of time in your car,
selecting the proper car audio and electronics equipment can almost
turn your morning commute into a pleasant experience. In choosing the
best car audio system, there are a number of things to consider.
Let's start with a question that should be obvious, but is
unfortunately forgotten quite often. You may love Audiobahn equipment,
but will it fit in your car? What kind of car do you have? If you have a
German car, the radio sizes are set by a body called DIN. In Japan, the
standards body is called EIAJ. In the United States, the standards are
set by the SAE.
Since there are at least four basic DIN sizes, don't assume that
there is a one-size-fits-all system for all German cars. However, there
is one basic radio size that features the "twin shaft" that you might
have seen in cars made before the '80s. There is one size of radio that
will only fit in specific General Motors and Chrysler vehicles, and
there is something called a "double DIN" size that is found in many
Japanese cars.
Whether you are purchasing an amplifier, speakers, or sub woofers,
it's always a smart idea to check with the vendor or manufacturer to
ensure a proper fit. If you are unable to find this information, don't
despair. Installation packages, which are sometimes called "fit kits,"
may be available to modify the audio system of your dreams so that it
will in fact fit in your car.
