The introduction of the Electro Optical System, or EOS, was a major breakthrough in technology. Canon introduced their Canon EOS line in 1987, after making the risky decision to completely drop their line of FD-mount lens optics and cameras. The FD lenses were replaced with fully electronic lenses which were not compatible with previous lenses. While this alienated FD lens users, it turned out to be a gamble worth taking.
It didn't take long after the appearance of Canon EOS system for Canon to soon be competing for the top spot in the professional SLR camera market. It soon surpassed Nikon as the leading choice in cameras. Additionally, Canon offered low-end EOS cameras, something that its major competitor, Nikon, did not focus on. This drove sales of the Canon line up considerably.
Canon EOS cameras are auto-focus, single-lens reflex cameras. The lenses for use with these cameras are the EF line of lenses. It is important to note that while all EF lenses will fit on Canon EOS cameras, the lens variation known as EF-S will only fit on EF-S mount cameras. EF-S cameras are compatible with both variations.
One camera that is compatible with the complete line of EOS lenses and flashes is the Canon EOS 20D. This camera offers professional features with a consumer price tag. Some of those features include an 8.2-mega-pixel CMOS sensor, Digic II image processor and five frames per second performance for up to 23 consecutive frames.
